Ο «Ιβάν ο Τρομερός» ήταν ο πιο διεστραμμένος φύλακας στο στρατόπεδο εξόντωσης της Τρεμπλίνκα στην Πολωνία, εκεί, όπου περισσότεροι από 900 χιλιάδες Εβραίοι, Πολωνοί και Ρομά έχασαν τη ζωή τους με φρικιαστικό τρόπο, κατά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.

Το Netflix στο νέο του ντοκιμαντέρ με τίτλο «The Devil Next Door» επικεντρώνεται στην υπόθεση του John Demjanjuk, ενός συνταξιούχου εργάτη σε αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία από το Κλίβελαντ, ο οποίος δικάστηκε τη δεκαετία του 1980, αφού κατηγορήθηκε από επιζώντες του Ολοκαυτώματος ότι ήταν ο «Ιβάν ο Τρομερός» φύλακας που διέπραξε εγκλήματα σε ναζιστικά στρατόπεδα.

Did you watch The Devil Next Door on @netflix If not, you should, it’s an incredible mini series about the War Criminal Ivan “John” Demjanjuk and the accusation of him being Ivan the Terrible of Treblinka. I was a little too young during the early parts of the trial in the 80’s in Israel to have thorough memories of the events, but I have some memories of the conversations around the dinner table being that we moved from Israel to Cleveland in the middle of the circus. It was incredible to see the pain on the survivors faces as they told their stories. It reminded me of my grandparents and hearing their stories first hand. A few things jumped out at me during this series. 1) the cell that he was in during the trial in Jerusalem was a cage and not pleasant, but well above the standards that any other country would provide for someone on trial for war crimes. 2) while he was convicted in circuit court of being Ivan The Terrible , the Supreme Court said that there was a shadow of a doubt that he was Ivan the Terrible, but they did not say he was innocent, and they did not say he wasn’t an SS officer. This is why his US citizenship was revoked and he was extradited to Germany, who subsequently convicted him. 3) I never felt bad for his children or family until watching this documentary. It’s pretty wild to see their pain. This was their father, grandfather and I feel bad for their pain, but also that doesn’t override the need to handle him. I would love to hear other people’s points of view on this. Both Jewish and not, from Israel or Ohio and not. Do you remember when this happened? Or did you learn about this from Netflix? Ο John Demjanjuk ήταν ένας φιλήσυχος Αμερικανός, πατέρας τριών παιδιών, εργαζόμενος της Ford που ζούσε σε μία συνοικία του Κλίβελαντ και δεν είχε προκαλέσει ποτέ κανέναν με τη συμπεριφορά του.

Το αντίθετο, αφού εύκολα θα μπορούσε κάποιος να τον χαρακτηρίσει ως υπόδειγμα οικογενειάρχη.

Όταν, όμως, οι διεθνείς έρευνες που προσπαθούσαν να ξετρυπώσουν κρυμμένους Ναζί έφτασαν στο κατώφλι του σπιτιού του, έγινε, όχι άδικα και μέσα σε μία νύχτα, το συνώνυμο του Διαβόλου για τους απανταχού Εβραίους του πλανήτη.

Στο ντοκιμαντέρ ξετυλίγεται τελικά ένα απίστευτο γαϊτανάκι στο οποίο εμπλέκονται το κράτος του Ισραήλ, οι σοβιετικές μυστικές υπηρεσίες αλλά και οι αμερικανικές δικαστικές αρχές.

Το «The Devil Next Door» περιέχει σκηνές από τις δίκες του Demjanjuk (ο οποίος έχασε σχεδόν αμέσως την αμερικανική υπηκοότητα και εκδόθηκε στο Ισραήλ με πιο πιθανή κατάληξη τη θανατική καταδίκη) που κόβουν την ανάσα.

Οι περιγραφές των ελάχιστων επιζώντων της Τρεμπλίνκα σου σφίγγουν το στομάχι· ο σαδισμός των φρουρών έφτανε σε τέτοια σημεία διαστροφής που οι εικόνες της Μεσαιωνικής Κόλασης δεν είναι αρκετές για να τον περιγράψουν.

The new Netflix docuseries «The Devil Next Door,» about suspected Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk, was released this week. Demjanjuk was the defendant in four different court proceedings relating to crimes that he committed while serving as a collaborator of the Nazi regime. Investigations of Demjanjuk’s Holocaust-era role began in 1975. Following a lengthy investigation and a trial, the US District Federal Court in Cleveland stripped Demjanjuk of his US citizenship. He was eventually extradited and deported from the United States to stand trial on criminal charges, first to Israel and later to Germany. His conviction in Israel as «Ivan the Terrible» of the Treblinka killing center was overturned in 1993, but at his second trial––which took place in Germany in 2009––German prosecutors indicted him on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder at the Sobibor killing center. Two years later, Demjanjuk was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. He was eventually freed pending appeal of the conviction. Demjanuk died in a German nursing home in 2012. Demjanjuk’s case underscored the importance of historical record in the search for justice for crimes against humanity, and raised the question, «Is it ever too late to pursue justice?» Although investigative efforts continue, any perpetrators still alive and able to stand trial are more than 90 years old. Το Netflix αντιμέτωπο με τον πρωθυπουργό της Πολωνίας

Σύμφωνα με το THR, ο πρωθυπουργός της Πολωνίας, Ματέους Μοραβιέτσκι έθεσε ζήτημα κάνοντας λόγο για ιστορικά ψευδείς χάρτες της χώρας του κατά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο που παρουσιάζονται στη σειρά.

Ο πρωθυπουργός της Πολωνίας έγραψε σε επιστολή του προς τον διευθύνοντα σύμβουλο της Netflix Ριντ Χέιστινγκς που δημοσιεύθηκε στο Facebook ότι η σειρά «λανθασμένα τοποθετεί αρκετά γερμανικά ναζιστικά στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης εντός των σημερινών συνόρων της Πολωνίας».

«Δεν υπάρχει κανένα σχόλιο ή κάποια εξήγηση ότι οι συγκεκριμένες τοποθεσίες (στον χάρτη) ήταν υπό τη διοίκηση της Γερμανίας» αναφέρει.

Φαίνεται ότι το βασικό σημείο της διαμάχης έχει να κάνει με την κατοχή της Πολωνίας από την Γερμανία.

«Καθώς η χώρα μου δεν υπήρχε εκείνη την περίοδο ως ανεξάρτητο κράτος και εκατομμύρια Πολωνοί δολοφονήθηκαν σε αυτά τα μέρη, αυτό το στοιχείο στο «The Devil Next Door» δεν είναι τίποτα λιγότερο από αναθεώρηση της ιστορίας» αναφέρει ο πρωθυπουργός της Πολωνίας.

Στην επιστολή του ο κ. Μοραβιέτσκι υποστηρίζει ότι η σειρά «The Devil Next Door» υποδεικνύει την Πολωνία ως υπεύθυνη για τα ναζιστικά στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης και επικρίνει τους δημιουργούς της ότι δεν αποσαφηνίζουν πως η Πολωνία ήταν υπό γερμανικό έλεγχο. Ζητά μάλιστα από το Netflix να τροποποιήσει τους χάρτες ή να ενημερώσει με κάποιον τρόπο το κοινό για «το τρομερό λάθος».

Εκπρόσωπος της Netflix δήλωσε στο THR:

«Γνωρίζουμε τις ανησυχίες σχετικά με το «Devil Next Door» και εξετάζουμε επειγόντως το θέμα».
