Editorial: Resisting Moscow’s aggression to the very end

Yesterday’s decision to expel twelve Russian diplomats was a highly symbolic move by the Greek government.

It was mandated by Athens’ decision to stay on the right side of history

No one can argue that this choice came out of the blue. On the contrary, it was entirely in line with the recent diplomatic moves of most EU countries.

That the decision to expel the diplomats came after the savage attack in Bucha demonstrates the fact that it was necessary.

The reaction of the Russian side, through a statement issued by its embassy in Athens (photo), was to be expected, judging from Moscow’s hostile rhetoric since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine, with constant threats and claims of fake news – in Greece and throughout Europe.

Russia’s threats must not influence the political will of the Greek government to proceed with the expulsion of the twelve diplomats and to condemn Russia’ actions in Ukraine.

Greece has not opted for a crafty neutrality. From the start it has taken a perfectly clear position with full cognisance of the fact that there may be repercussions.

Athens has a duty to maintain the same position to the very end, without backpedaling or second thoughts.

At a time when all parties are being judged by their choices and decisions, Greece has chosen to align itself with the side that supports the territorial integrity and sovereign rights of all states, without provisos.
