Dear collegues,

The greek government some hours ago arrested five of our friends and journalists working for the newspaper Philelefteros and the web site liberal.gr.Their «crime» was a critical reportage about the greek immigration policy.I think that it’s urgent for the Association to protest and to sensetize the european institutions.Infortunately this is not the only case in Greece of to day.So its time to react.I am waiting for some reactions of solidarity. You can believe me, we have a real totalitarian attitude in front of us.

Athanase Papandropoulos – Hon.President of the AEJ

Dear Athanase,

Colleagues, it is a shocking case. AEJ and other media/press freedom groups will publish a press freedom alert on Council of Europe Platform www.coe.int/fom designed for such cases about the journalists’ arrests in Greece. The alert is to be sent directly to the government for their response (and follow-up)….

Dear Athanase,

We cannot accept that EU countries put journalists in prison because they want to do their work!

We must follow the evolution of the situation and alert MEPs if freedom of expression and media freedom are not respected.

Best

Cher Athanase,

Carmelo Occhino

Dear Athanase,

I want to express my solidarity to the Greek Section and jailed Greek colleagues.

I strongly support the general reaction AEJ will make and will distribute it among Turkish journalistic circles.

Best.

Dear Athanase,

I join the general reaction of shock and amazement. With several members with a Greek background we certainly will follow this -as AEJ Belgium- closely and see how to communicate on this over here in Brussels.

LIEVEN TAILLIE

AEJ Belgium

Dear Athanase,

From the Finnish section, we express our solidarity with you and your colleagues. It comes as quite a shock from the cradle of democracy. We stand with you in your protest against the Greek government in this act of cowardice.

Best regards

Violetta Teetor

Chairperson of the European Journalists Network

Finland branch of Association of European Journalists

Dear Athanase,

Solidarity from AEJ-Bulgaria. Arrests of journalists for their work and articles is a black point for a modern democracy and absolutely unacceptable for EU member state. As you know we have had similar situation in Bulgaria just a week ago with investigative journalists – one from Bulgaria, one from Romania. May be we could think of alert for what is happening in the South/Eastern part of EU with media freedom standards.

Best,

Dear Athanase,

The Austrian section of AEJ unequivocably condemns the arresting and any interference in the work of journslists. This should never happen in a democratic state. We will do our best to support you.
